Sustainable Large-format Porcelain Benefits Your Home

Builders, homeowners, and interior designers are more mindful of the things they use to build and design their homes. More importantly, the sustainability of the products and the impact they have on the Earth. This year, National Earth Day is being celebrated on Saturday, April 22nd. Choosing sustainability is finding ways to maximize resource utilities without compromising our environment.

Unlike non-renewable and manmade materials, large-format porcelain is composed of some of the most abundant minerals on the planet: sand, feldspar, and clay. These resources can be naturally sourced without disrupting the surrounding ecosystems.

Marble is a non-renewable resource and its extraction from land causes irreversible environmental damage. These harmful effects include water and air pollution, displacing animals and plants, and deteriorating soil quality. Marble mining also leaves mountains gutted causing instability and flooding, devastating the surrounding ecosystem.

After mining, marble is transferred across the globe to manufacturers for processing resulting in heavy fuel emissions. Once the marble is extracted, it is then transferred across the world to be manufactured, resulting in high air pollution and fuel emissions. The marble manufacturing process also requires extensive amounts of water and energy that are ultimately wasted once the product makes its way into your home.

Forbes recognized large-format porcelain as a sustainable product in home building and design in the past year. Porcelain also promotes wellness and creativity in your living space. Large-format porcelain can be customized to mimic the look of other natural stones like marble, without damage to our environment.

“Sustainability and wellness are very closely linked,” says Isfira Jensen, New York-based interior designer. Homeowners are willing to switch to more sustainable materials if it means increasing their green footprint. Out with the marble and in with large-format porcelain!

Another arising trend is induction cooktops; gas is no longer needed in the kitchen, improving the air quality of your home. These cooktops are efficient and eliminate any natural gas fumes in the kitchen. Induction cooktops are installed underneath the porcelain countertops and use electromagnetic energy. According to the California Air Resources Board, it says, “Natural gas stoves can release carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and other harmful pollutants into the air, which can be toxic to people and pets.” With induction cooktops, not only are you going to have more counter space, but it will avoid introducing carbon monoxide and other pollutants into your home.

Another reason porcelain makes for a healthy home surface is that it is free of harmful chemicals and plastic. Large-format porcelain slabs are nonporous, meaning germs can’t enter your kitchen countertop or shower walls. No need for harsh cleaning chemicals, clean porcelain with warm water, leaving your space looking as fresh and new as the day it was installed.

If you are looking for a luxurious remodel but want to reduce your carbon footprint, large-format porcelain is the ideal choice. Large-format porcelain is an ultra-lux, high-performance, man-made material created from a formula of natural minerals and cutting-edge technology. It promotes sustainability and is recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as an environmentally friendly product.

The Process for Porcelain: Sintering

Porcelain is created by a process called sintering. This process combines multiple materials into one solid material through very high and intense heat and pressure. This process essentially mimics Earth’s natural process to create marble and other stone on the market.

The sintering process gives large-format porcelain its’ durability, heat, and stain resistance due to being fired at extremely high temperatures.

When thinking about which material to use in your home, remember to choose one that supports a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Moderno Porcelain Works is fully dedicated to large-format porcelain. We’re proud to promote such a sustainable product!
